Also known as Kloten Airport, Zürich Airport is the largest international airport in Switzerland, and has three terminals. Zürich Airport is situated 10km north of the city, and the route between the two is very straightforward. From the airport, follow the Butzenbüelring outside the terminal towards the A51. At the 63-Zürich-Nord, keep in the right 2 lanes to merge onto the A1L, and follow the signs into the Zürich’s CBD.
If you’ve made arrangements to pick up your hired car from the city, there’s a train running direct from the airport to the city, as well as busses and taxis.
Handy tips for driving in Zürich
- Motorists in Switzerland drive on the right, and give way to traffic on the right.
- Look out for trams, as they have the right of way at all times.
- Headed onto the motorway? Make sure your rental car has a Swiss motorway sticker attached. Your rental car should come with one, but it pays to double check.
- The speed limit in the city is 50km/h, and 100km/h on the highways.

Where to park your rental car in Zürich
At Zürich Airport, park your hired car in the short-term parking zone at a rate of 5 francs per 15 minutes. The daily maximum is 48 francs . Long-term parking must be booked in advance, and rates begin at 48 francs for the first day, with increases per day thereafter. Book your long-term parking on the Zürich Airport website.
In Zürich, on-street parking is often restricted to residents. The best places to park are in the parking garages, of which there are 10 throughout the city. Rates begin at around 2 francs per hour, and are often free between 9pm and 8am.
