St. Maarten is the Dutch side of a dual nation island in the Caribbean sea. The other side is French-owned and known as St. Martin. The island is roughly divided 60/40, with the French occupying the majority of land in the north and the southern half belonging to the Dutch. With a cheap St. Maarten rental car visitors can freely drive across the unpatrolled borders to explore both countries.

Driving tips for St. Maarten rental car

Use these additional tips to make the most out of your car hire in St. Maarten:

  • There is no checkpoint at the Dutch/French border crossing giving visitors easy access to both sides of the island. Confirm with your rental supplier if you are able to take your car to the other side.
  • The roads throughout the island are generally in good condition, but are often narrow and windy. Take care and drive to the conditions.
  • The roads are shared with both pedestrians and animals.
  • Traffic congestion is heavy during peak hours. Avoid driving between 7-9am and 4-7pm
  • There are two drawbridges: Simpson Bay Bridge and Causeway Bridge. Both open several times a day to allow boats through. This sometimes causes delays.

St. Maarten will not be enough to uncover Europe. Great options include car hire from Amsterdam in Netherlands, Berlin in Germany, and Madrid in Spain. Book your Europe escapade with GoSee!

The car was perfect for the weekend, but there was no counter at the airport for the Dollar car company I had rented....bit stressful. I needed to call to find out that I needed to go to the Hertz counter. Otherwise I would recommend the GoSee car rental experience.
