Getting from the airport to Saint Jean
It’s a swift trip of less than a mile from Saint Barthelemy Airport to nearby Saint Jean. Just turn left when you leave the terminals onto the D209 and follow it to the coast. The airport is so close to the beach that there are signs warning sunbathers not to lie opposite the end of the runway!
Saint Barthelemy car hire driving tips
- Traffic in Saint Barthelemy drives on the right-hand side of the road, with overtaking to the left.
- The maximum speed on the island is 45 kilometres per hour/28 miles per hour. Remember, it’s a small place, and you’re on island time - there’s no reason to exceed this speed!
- The roads can be narrow and winding. Drive very carefully, and use your engine to slow down where possible.
- There are just two gas stations on the island, and both close on Sundays, so always ensure you have some fuel in the tank to avoid a breakdown.
- The limit for drivers’ blood alcohol concentration in Saint Barthelemy is 0.05%.
Parking at the airport and in Saint Jean/Saint Barthelemy
There are plenty of places in Saint Barts to park for free, including at the airport. In central Gustavia, there is a two-hour parking time limit.
