Finding a cheap car rental in Puerto Rico is just a click away

Puerto Rico isn’t technically its own country, being an “unincorporated territory” of the United States, but anyone who touches down on this enchanting Caribbean island will feel worlds away from mainland America. No matter what kind of travel experiences excite you, with a rental car in Puerto Rico you can treat yourself to the holiday of your dreams. The island’s sparkling sands are a big drawcard for surfers and beach-bums alike, while others choose to delve into the heart of Puerto Rico’s rainforests or appreciate the unique meld of cultures to be found in its towns and cities.

Making car rental in Puerto Rico a cinch

Having set down on the island, one of the first things on your to-do list will be securing your car hire for your Puerto Rico adventure. Of course, waiting until you arrive to sort out your rental is madness. The easiest, most hassle free way to go is booking online well ahead of time - and those who search and book using GoSee can avoid all trouble of trawling through multiple car hire websites.

Car rentals around Puerto Rico

No matter where you choose to pick up your Puerto Rico car rental from, it won’t be hard for you to get where you’re wanting to go. However, if you know which part of the island you’d like to spend most of your time in, it’s still worth being choosy when it comes to your pickup location.

  • San Juan car rental - San Juan is among the oldest European settlements in the New World, having stood for nearly a hundred years before pilgrims arrived in what’s now Massachusetts on the Mayflower, so there’s plenty of history to uncover. Even if you’re not a history buff, the beaches are to die for and party animals can head to Isla Verde for its nightclubs, bars and casinos.
  • Aguadilla car rental - Set at the northwestern corner of Puerto Rico, Aguadilla is a popular hub for surfers looking to sample the waves in the Porta del Sol region. If you have kids along for the ride, a visit to Las Cascadas Water Park is essential - this is the largest water park in the Caribbean and a great way to stay cool on a hot day.

  • Ponce car rental - On the southern side of the island lies Ponce, Puerto Rico’s second largest city. Strolling through the historic centre makes for an incredible experience with its beautiful fountains and colonial architecture, and taking a jaunt along the seaside La Guancha Paseo Tablado boardwalk followed by dinner at an adjacent restaurant can be the perfect end to a great day of exploration.

Car rental suppliers in Puerto Rico

In spite of its relatively small size, there is certainly no lack of car rental options in Puerto Rico. Brands which have become household names in car hire like Alamo, Hertz, Budget and Avis are all featured on GoSee - and we are dedicated to getting you the best deal. There’s also the opportunity take advantage of excellently priced deals from slightly less well known suppliers such as NU Car Rental, AutoEurope and E-Z Rent-a-Car.

Puerto Rico road rules

If you’re familiar with driving in the United States, you won’t find too many surprises in Puerto Rico’s road rules. Puerto Ricans drive on the right hand side of the road, and all speed limits are in miles per hour though it’s worth noting that distances are measured in kilometres. Keeping an eye out for speed limit signs is always a good idea, but if none are in sight here’s a rough guide to default limits: 25 mph in cities, towns and other built up areas, 45 mph on rural roads and between 55-65 mph on highways. The legal blood alcohol level for drivers in Puerto Rico is 0.08%. This means that after more than one drink you’ll almost certainly be over the limit, but we always recommend that if you’re planning to enjoy a drink or two make sure driving responsibilities are handed off to someone else. While licenced drivers 18 and over are allowed to drive in Puerto Rico, most car rental companies on the island require drivers to be at least 23 years of age, and may have a surcharge for those between 23 and 25 years old. US citizens can use their domestic driver’s licence, otherwise it’s wise to pick up an international driver’s licence before your visit, and carry your passport in the car with you just in case.

Puerto Rico driving tips

  • Puerto Ricans have a reputation as aggressive drivers, but to be fair this is more applicable in the larger cities like San Juan and eases somewhat as you get into the country. However, it is wise to drive defensively and slow down on narrow, windy roads.
  • Road conditions in Puerto Rico vary widely - most highways are in excellent shape, but smaller, less travelled roads can sometimes be poorly maintained. Keep an eye out for potholes, especially in rural areas.
  • Road signage isn’t great here, so if you’re hoping to do quite a bit of touring around the island, booking a Puerto Rico car rental with a GPS could save you a lot of time and headaches.
  • If you can, avoid driving in cities during rush hours, which take place in the morning, around noon and at the end of the work day.
  • Toll stops are common on Puerto Rican highways, so always keep plenty of small bills and change on hand if you’re heading out on a long trip. Don’t worry, the toll prices are generally very low.
