Dublin has the busiest airport in Ireland, servicing 19 million passengers annually. From Dublin, connect to other Irish cities and many popular European countries such as Spain, France, Italy and Germany.
There are two terminals which are interconnected and located within a short walk of each other. Terminal 1 is the older of the two terminals, built in 1972 and is now home to Dublin's long haul-flights. The much newer Terminal 2 was built in 2010 and services the short-haul flights.
Free broadband WiFi is available throughout both terminals. Find a variety of meal options with cafes, fast food outlets, restaurants, and bars. With plenty of retail outlets, shop for big brand fashion, jewelry and more.
The rental car offices in Terminal 1 are located in the arrivals hall. If you are coming from Terminal 2, follow the signs to to easily find the desks.
Servicing domestic and international flights, Dublin Airport had more than 20 million passengers in 2013, indicating just how much of the tourism dollar Ireland attracts. There are two terminals, with airlines such as British Airways, Emirates and Lufthansa all in operation.
The airport itself is relatively easy to negotiate, with a number of car rental depots at Terminal 1. These include Hertz, Budget, Europcar and the domestic Dooley Car Rentals. Your airport pick-up relates to the aeroplane icon when you book your vehicle. If it says ‘On Airport’, your collection is simple. Otherwise it may say Shuttle, which can be a less expensive option, as you have to make a short trip to collect.
Take care driving outside of the city, where the country roads are quite narrow. Expect to see farm machinery and animals on the road, at times. Also be prepared for a lot of roundabouts and many toll roads, with most motorways charging a fee.
Driving time from Dublin Airport to the city centre is only 15 minutes. Take the M50 motorway from the airport and then exit 7 to the N4. Follow this road east to the city centre.
Arriving in a new country is never easy, so here are some handy tips for driving your car rental in Dublin:
● Just like New Zealand and the UK, you drive on the left-hand side of the road.
● If you do travel into the rural areas of Ireland, petrol stations can be sparse. Always make sure you have enough fuel to travel.
● Don’t get out by toll roads, such as on the M50 motorway. Check with your hire company to avoid an unwanted fine.
● The Irish weather can turn very nasty on occasion. Be aware that heavy rain can strike at pretty much any time. Drive carefully in winter as the roads can become icy.
● Other drivers may flash their lights and blinkers or wave to say thank you.
● Certain Pedestrian and Residential Zones have a speed limit of 30kp/h. Observe the road signs carefully
There are over 3000 short-term car parks in the multi-story buildings, directly opposite Terminals 1 and 2, at the Dublin airport.
Take care when parking on the street in Dublin and only use designated parking spaces. Illegally parking can result in your car being clamped or towed, with a hefty €160 release fee. Single yellow lines and double red lines indicate no parking.
