Hiring a car in Fiji

There’s something about South Pacific island holiday. Palm trees, coconuts and ultra-clear water are a few of the most famous hallmarks of a Pacific vacation, but you’ll discover more than just pristine tropical land and seascapes when you visit Fiji. The national culture is ideally conducive to relaxation - no matter how busy you’ve been, it won’t be long before you find yourself acclimatising to “island time”, a much more laid back approach to life that infiltrates every aspect of society. Fiji’s people are known as some of the most friendly and welcoming on earth so if you want to make your holiday really special, don’t forget to look up from the sand and sea every now and again and connect with the wonderful people around you.

Airport rentals around Fiji

No matter where in Fiji you're headed for, chances are you’ll be landing on the main island of Viti Levu before continuing your journey. Read on for a bit of information on three of the most popular spots for visitors to pick up a car rental in Fiji:

  • Nadi car rental - Nadi International Airport is the main airport not only for Fiji itself but also the surrounding South Pacific islands, so most visitors will end up picking up a car rental from Nadi Airport before continuing on to their destination. Denarau Island is only a few kilometres to the west and provides a classic taste of South Pacific resort life. More adventurous folk might want steer their car hire from Nadi toward hiking, snorkelling or scuba diving opportunities.
  • Nausori car rental - This is the closest airport to the Fijian capital of Suva - if you’re flying in from Auckland or Sydney, Nausori might be the best option for you, particularly if you’re wanting to visit Fiji’s southeastern areas. It will take you about 40 minutes to drive from Nausori Airport to Suva itself and from there, Fiji is your oyster.
  • Suva car rental - If you’ve got some way to make it from Nausori International Airport to Suva (whether someone is picking you up or you’re opting for a taxi/shuttle into Suva) you have the option of picking up a cheap car hire for your Fiji trip from a city depot. GoSee lists plenty of non-airport depots, so remember to keep an eye out for city options if that’s what works best for your trip.

Car rental suppliers in Fiji

There is a good handful of suppliers from which you can rent a car in Fiji. Europcar, Avis, Hertz and Budget have you covered if you’re looking for the security of big name recognition, while Angels Rental Cars and Keddy by Europcar give you the chance to find some stunning deals from brands that are a little less famous.

Fiji road rules

Like many other former members of the British Empire, Fiji traffic moves on the left hand side of the road. If you’re visiting from Australia, New Zealand or the UK this will just be business as usual - for almost everyone else, just be careful at intersections and the adjustment should go pretty smoothly. If you can’t see a speed limit sign anywhere, the default limit is 50 km/h in built up areas. Limits will range between 60 and 80 km/h on the open road, so always keep an eye out for speed signs to let you know the exact limit. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08%, meaning more than one drink will almost certainly put you over the line. If you’ve been drinking at all, it’s safest to leave the driving to someone else. In terms of paperwork, always keep your driver’s licence (it can be foreign but needs to be current) and car rental documents with you. It’s not strictly required, but keeping a copy of your passport handy can also be a good idea. Visitors should note that it’s illegal to eat or consume beverages while driving so if all the road tripping has you feeling peckish, it’s best to make a pitstop for lunch.

Fiji driving tips

  • Try to avoid driving at night in Fiji. Street lighting isn’t always the best and it’s easy to miss potholes, or more importantly people or animals walking across the road. The same applies for heavy rain, which can be just as effective at reducing visibility.
  • Leave plenty of time if you’re planning on taking a bit of a road trip in Fiji. Rural roads aren’t always well maintained so it pays to take it slow and just enjoy scenery along the way.
  • There are often speed bumps in place as the road transitions from open country to town or village: be sure to slow down in time, both for safety’s sake and to avoid a speeding fine.
