Camper van hire Edinburgh tips for the savvy traveller

Some planning tips for campervan hire Edinburgh holiday

  • Make sure to use a GPS when driving near Old Town as many roads are off-limits to cars and the road signs are hard to read or find. We recommend parking just outside the city centre limits and walking or taking public transport into Old Town.  Edinburgh Waverley is the main railway station in the city.
  • Mortonhall Caravan & Camping Park is silent but busy. There is a pub and restaurant there with friendly staff. It will allow you to access a bus stop nearby so is great to get into the city. Edinburgh Caravan Club Site is near the coast and has welcoming people. Buses run every 10 minutes into the town during the day, and every half hour in the evening. Just west of Edinburgh is Linwater Caravan Park. It offers great facilities for your campervan hire and lovely walks nearby. Located on the outskirts of Edinburgh is Drummohr Caravan Park. It has 108 pitches and an excellent bus service into Princes Street.
  • Scotland is one of the few places that still allow wild camping. Take your motorhome rental to popular cities but respect the local rules and leave no trace. Take all your rubbish with you and don’t overload public bins.
  • Make sure you take any essentials if you’re heading out of the city in your Edinburgh motorhome hire, as chances are you may not be able to pick stuff up locally. Bring a good map to help you navigate the area in your motorhome rental.
  • It can get really cold during the night, so bring extra-warm clothing.

You’re going to love Edinburgh

If your driver's licence is not written in English, you must provide an IDP/International Driving Permit. So prepare your documents, pick up the vehicle, and have a fantastic time while driving in Europe at your own pace.

What is the speed limit in Edinburgh?

Being able to tour Scotland and its cities has its rules and responsibilities. National speed limits are 70mph on Motorways and Dual Carriageways (60 for caravans), 30mph in built-up areas (20mph around schools) and 60mph otherwise (50mph for caravans). Do note that larger vehicles like motorhomes/campervans are heavier and take longer to stop and slow down, so driving slower than you would in a car and giving plenty of room in front is recommended.
