What you need to know about campervan hire Tauranga New Zealand

Campervan rental Tauranga tips for the savvy traveller

If you pick up your Tauranga campervan hire from the airport, you’re just a few minutes’ drive from downtown Tauranga—so you have the whole city at your fingertips! But before you get going, remember to familiarise yourself with your vehicle and ask the team at pick-up if you have any questions about your campervan or driving in the region.

Some driving tips for your campervan hire Tauranga

  • Before you start your journey, think about where you will park up your motorhome as you travel. There are a number of campsites to choose from in the Tauranga and Bay of Plenty region run by the Department of Conservation as well as some private providers.
  • Freedom camping is also available in some areas for fully self-contained motorhomes, which are campervans complete with their own toilet and waste-disposal facilities. Check the rules of each site to avoid getting a fine.
  • Be aware of local toll roads! Tauranga is home to two out of three toll roads in New Zealand. They are the Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road and the Takitimu Drive Toll Road. If you use these toll roads, a fee will be charged to the vehicle and you are responsible for paying this. You don’t even have to get out of your car to pay, as your vehicle is recorded electronically. You can pay your toll online before or after your trip, or at some service stations. The amount charged depends on the type of vehicle you’re in but don’t worry—the prices are signposted as you approach each road.

The Mount Maunganui coastline looks like a grand invitation to come and come back to a Tauranga adventure!

You’re going to love Tauranga

Tauranga is a stunning seaside gem and is known for its bright sunny days. Not only are there a host of natural wonders on its doorstep, such as nearby Mt Maunganui and vast golden beaches, there are also plenty of metropolitan perks to enjoy. Cafes, bars, restaurants, shops, spas, local parks—you name it, the Tauranga region has it!

Some nearby must-see attractions for your journey include:

Mount Maunganui

Spectacular to view at any angle, but better to be experienced - that's the Mount Maunganui Beach, a good stop over for your Tauranga itinerary.Fondly referred to locally as ‘’The Mount’’, this relaxed township is just a short drive from Tauranga Airport and is home to one of New Zealand’s most famous beaches. In the summertime, it’s perfect for a swim, and in winter it’s the perfect spot for a stroll with a view. If you’re feeling energetic, you can climb to the top of the Mount itself for incredible panoramic views of the region. Finish off with an ice cream and a refreshing dip!

Waimarino Adventure Park

This fun-filled family attraction is a 10-minute drive from central Tauranga. Nestled on the banks of the Wairoa River, it boasts overwater human catapults, pedal boats, rock climbing, trampoline, slides, swings, kayaks, ropes and much more.

Moturiki Island

Want to walk to an island? Then check out Moturiki, a small island just off Mount Maunganui’s Main Beach and connected by a small bridge. Stroll around this protected reserve for beautiful beach and ocean views.

Kaiate Falls

Every Kiwi road trip needs a visit to a waterfall! This beautiful forest and waterfall setting is about half an hour from central Tauranga and is well worth the trip. Wander by the series of waterfalls and then enjoy a refreshing dip in the swimming hole at the bottom of the falls. Pack a picnic and soak in the serenity of this natural wonder.

Where to go in your Tauranga campervan hire

Pick up your campervan hire from Tauranga Airport, the perfect starting point for exploring the East Coast.

Whakatane

Motorhome hire will allow you to go beach hopping along the Bay of Plenty. Follow coastal roads south to Ohope beach, an 11km stretch of sun-bleached sand and clear blue waters. The West End is a favourite with surfers. If you’re keen on fishing, Ohiwa Harbour offers near-perfect conditions, as well as water-skiing, sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. Getting to Whakatane, you’ll head through Te Puke, kiwifruit capital of NZ. You won’t miss the giant kiwifruit, but be sure to taste all the sugary treats, too.
