The majority of the Queenstown campervan hire locations are in the vicinity of the airport, which is located about ten minutes from the city centre in the township of Frankton. GoSee’s rental partners provide travellers with a free shuttle service upon arrival.

What you need to know about campervan hire Queenstown

Visit Lake Hayes also known as Wai Whaka Ata, a wondrous scenic short loop being part of Queenstown Trail Great Ride network. You’ll likely be picking up your campervan hire from Queenstown Airport in Frankton, a picturesque suburb ten minutes from central Queenstown. With all the splendours of the Southern Alps and Southern Lakes within easy reach, you’ll be well placed to begin the road trip of a lifetime.

Whilst our selection of campervans is modern and exceptionally user-friendly, getting acquainted with the vehicle first is a must. Our rental partners will be happy to answer any questions you may have before you get behind the wheel of your Queenstown motorhome hire. New Zealand drives on the left side of the road, and the roads skew a bit narrow. Roundabouts are common, and parking spaces tend to be small. Queenstown CBD gets congested, so motorhome parking is designated to select areas.

You’re going to love Queenstown

Queenstown is the jewel in New Zealand’s tourism crown, and the locals are friendly and eager to show it off. Visitors will be captivated by the scenery at Queenstown’s prime tourist location on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. The options for food, drinks, and entertainment are endless here, both on and off the water.

Not far away is the Skyline Gondola which takes you to the top of Bob’s Peak, offering 360 degree views of Queenstown, the lake, and the surrounding mountains. Sit back and gaze out at the Remarkables, Coronet Peak, Walter and Cecil Peak with a regionally produced Pinot Noir in hand, or get your blood pumping with some luge, ziplining, and paragliding.

Hiking and biking trails abound, with all the equipment you need for adventuring available in town. Within the Otago region, you can spend a relaxing day horseback riding and wine touring, followed by high octane activities such as skydiving and bungee jumping.

Where to go in your Queenstown campervan hire

queenstown miles holdenFrom Queenstown, the options for day trips are endless. Every route you choose will be uniquely scenic, whether you head northeast toward the old mining town of Arrowtown, or northwest along the lake toward the charming village of Glenorchy.

Longer campervan road trips give you the option of seeing more of New Zealand’s incredible landscape. Milford Sound in Fiordland is one of New Zealand’s most treasured locations and is only a few hours from Queenstown. Wanaka and Cardrona are must-see locations within an hour’s drive, with the option to continue on to the glaciers of the West Coast or north to the majestic Mount Cook/Aoraki and the glacial lakes.

campervan hire from Christchurch, is also a great option to begin or end your motorhome road trip. The city is just a 6-hour drive north of Queenstown.

Motorhome travellers also have the option of heading south towards Bluff and the Catlins, or southeast toward Dunedin and the coast. The sealife and seafood in this part of New Zealand is unmatched—and less travelled. GoSee of yourself!

Campervan rental Queenstown tips for the savvy traveller

Cardrona clad in snow still has fun activities that you will discover on your Queenstown winter road trip.It is imperative to book your Queenstown campervan rental early, particularly during peak seasons. This popular location books out well in advance, so you’ll want the best chance of securing the ideal vehicle for your trip. Choose your motorhome wisely, with consideration of what you need to suit your party, chosen route, and amount of equipment.

This mountainous region can prove a challenge to navigate, so we recommend sticking to the main highways and roads. More adventurous itineraries may require a sportier model and/or tire chains. Only park your campervan rental at designated camping sites and avoid private land. The South Island has plentiful facilities to serve motorhome travellers, but it is recommended that you plan your route and fuel and supply stops in advance as there can be stretches of road without an opportunity to stop.

Leave yourself extra time in each destination—there are so many gorgeous places that you’ll want to linger!

Another great place to begin your campervan roadtrip is Picton, where the inter-island ferries come in, or you can begin your journey in Auckland to explore more of New Zealand. Expect amazing deals from GoSee not just in Queenstown, but also as you book rentals from all over New Zealand.

See all of our FAQs

How old do you have to be to hire a campervan in Queenstown?

Drivers typically must be 21 years of age to rent a campervan in Queenstown. There are some exceptions to this rule, but there will likely be a surcharge for younger drivers. Our rental partners’ terms vary, so it is best to check the conditions of each one when browsing through vehicles.

Do I need a special driver’s licence to drive a campervan in Queenstown?

You do not need a special driver’s licence to drive a Queenstown campervan hire. Your current valid driver's licence is sufficient. However, if your licence is not printed in English, an International Driving Permit (IDP) or an official translation in English is required.

Where can I park my campervan in Queenstown?

You may choose from over 30 dedicated Queenstown campervan holiday parks for large motorhomes. Remember that large campers are not allowed to park in the Queenstown CBD. There is an infringement fee if you're caught parking the wrong way. Please camp responsibly and show care for our spectacular environment.

What is the minimum rental period?

The minimum rental period for Queenstown campervans is 7 days, and one-way hires are often restricted to a minimum of 14 days. However, there are exceptions depending on the pick up date/drop off date, location, and availability of the motorhomes. Our rental partners’ terms and rates may vary, so it is best to check out each one as you make your selection. Do note that the rental period minimums may also be longer during peak holiday periods.

Does every driver have to be there on pick up of the campervan?

All drivers must present their driver licences at the Queenstown camper rental branch upon pick up of the motorhome and sign the rental agreement. In some cases, guests may go to the branch prior to the collection and show their licences if they are unable to be there on the day.

Do I have to return my campervan with a full gas bottle and fuel tank?

Yes, you’ll need to top up your gas bottle and fuel tank at the closest service station before you drop off your vehicle at the dedicated return desk in the branch location.

Do I have to empty the waste-water and toilet?

Yes. Always make sure that your waste-water tank and toilet cassette are emptied at an authorised dump point before returning your motorhome rental at the Queenstown drop off branch.

Where can I camp for free in Queenstown?

There are freedom camping options available for certified, self-contained vehicles in the Queenstown area. Check out the Queenstown Council web page for the latest information about freedom camping sites, and download the CamperMate app to help you locate them.

Can we return our campervan before the branch opens?

Your rental campervan can usually only be picked up and returned during the branch’s office hours. It’s best to confirm hours and times well ahead of time as you may be able to opt for a branch that has hours more suited to your schedule. If your plans unexpectedly change after booking, you must contact the local branch in Queenstown for assistance with the drop off.

Are pets allowed in campervans?

Many of our partner providers allow pets, but some will charge an additional fee for bringing them along. Always double-check the listing of your chosen provider.
