Head towards the ocean and you’ll find that nature came to play ball, too. Stunning white-sand surf beaches are strung together from South Stradbroke Island to the NSW border. Visitors can spend the morning on the sand, the afternoon on roller coasters in Sea World, and the evenings enjoying the iconic Gold Coast food and nightlife scene. A guide to driving your hired campervan in the Gold Coast

Get off to a great, safe start with these helpful driving tips. For many customers, driving a campervan rental is a brand new experience—so whether you are an international or domestic visitor, read up and be prepared.

  • In Australia, traffic drives on the left-hand side of the road. If you are new to this configuration, we recommend taking an hour or so to become accustomed before hitting the highways in earnest.
  • Parking around the Gold Coast is mostly subject to restrictions and fees. Read signs carefully—and be aware that a larger RV or motorhome may not fit in some spaces.
  • 50 kilometres per hour is the default limit in residential and commercial area.100kph is the default in rural areas. Always look for speed limit signs to provide accurate information.
  • There is often traffic at peak hours around the Gold Coast and on the roads to and from Brisbane. We recommend avoiding travel during typical commute hours where possible.
  • The border between Queensland and New South Wales is immediately south of the Gold Coast. Be aware that there may be some minor differences in road rules between states: for example, tailgating is illegal in NSW and you must leave at least three seconds between you and the vehicle in front. In Queensland, it is illegal to have open containers of alcohol inside the vehicle.
  • If you’re heading inland into the Outback, stock up with plenty of food and water in case of a breakdown in a remote location. Always keep your fuel topped up too.

Our top tip is simply this: listen carefully to the depot staff when they give you an orientation to the vehicle, and ask any questions you can think of. They are your best resource when it comes to knowing how to drive and operate your motorhome rental.

Top destinations for a Gold Coast campervan road trip

At the border of south east Queensland and New South Wales, the Gold Coast is a great location from which to explore either or both states. There are fantastic destinations in any direction; you and your travelling partners can choose what suits you best.

We’ve put together a few ideas for your perusal. Take a look and start dreaming of your ideal RV rental adventure.

Brisbane and beyond

The bold, vibrant city of Brisbane lies just an hour from the Gold Coast, and it’s definitely worth a visit. Continue north and the attractions become a little less urban and a little more focused on Australia’s natural assets. There are myriad access points to the Great Barrier Reef, where you can jump on a dive tour in a coastal town and explore this incredible underwater landscape. You can’t go past the spectacular white sand of the Whitsundays without stopping for a night or two. There are plenty of places like Tamborine Mountain to encounter the country’s unique wildlife, whether at a zoo, a sanctuary, or in the wild.

Longreach and the Outback

The road to an outback adventure is nearer with an Aussie vacation! For an experience of Australia’s incredible inland expanses, head towards Longreach. This heritage town is a fantastic starting point for an Outback adventure, and history buffs will enjoy the many museums which tell the story of the region and the people who have inhabited it over the centuries. You can head further into the Red Centre for an even more intrepid journey, and even take a week or so to drive all the way to iconic Alice Springs and Uluru.

Wine regions of New South Wales

Make your way south towards Sydney in your campervan hire and you’ll soon find yourself in wine country: specifically, the Hunter Valley which is the region’s oldest wine region. It’s known for its chardonnay, semillon, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, and merlot varieties, and there are myriad cellar doors where you can enjoy food, wine, and scenery. You can also play a round of golf or sign on for an outdoor adventure in this beautiful area. And of course, make sure that your motorhome rental stays safely parked in a campground if you’re enjoying a local glass or two—sign on for a chauffeured wine tour instead of driving yourself.

People swimming at Sydney Bondi Beach.Sydney and the coast

If sun, sand, and surf are what you like, then head south in your Gold Coast campervan hire Australia and enjoy the many laidback coastal towns between there and Sydney. Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour, Sunshine Coast, and Port Macquarie are the big names, but there are so many delightful locales to visit on this route. And then there’s Sydney: Australia’s largest city with iconic sights to see and endless things to do.

I felt so much better dealing with a person then online. She was able to explain everything to me (as this is the first time hiring a motor home) thanks for the great service.

David Lewis
Everything was really great and good, smooth, and at a good price
Fredrik Videlycka
Gabriela is exceptionally professional, patient, and very caring when it comes to her customers. She went above and beyond, even going so far to inquire about foldable deck/garden chairs. Unfortunately I didn't get the size of the motorhome I was after, but that was due to my own lack of haste. In the end I had to settle for something much larger and more expensive. I can see why Motorhome Republic is so popular. Two thumbs up!
Marcel Kuijper
